| The Jazz Club, Birdland was named after "Yardbird",
middle name of great altosaxophone player, Charlie Parker. An owner, Morris Revey intended to open the Birdland in August of 1949, however, he was compelled to postpone up to December 15 because it took him a lot of time to obtain a license of authorities. |

Popular Pee Wee Marquette (his real name was
William Crayton Marquette), concert master of the club, always shrilled. You can hear his high voice in an album of "A Night at Birdland with Art Blakey Quintet" ![]() Photos by Francis Wolff, Copyright Mosaic Images Pee Wee (born in Montgomery, Alabama) had a height of 3 feet 9 inches, he was mean over money matters, for example, every leader of Jazz group appearing Birdland asked by him a tip, if rejected, Pee Wee did many harassments to him upon an introduciton of group member to Birdland's guest. In 1965, Birdland was closed. Then, after re-opening at 2745 Broadway, Upper West in 90's, it moved to curreent location, 44th St., between 8th and 9th Ave. |
